Training certificate

Who does the training?

All personnel handling animals used, bred or supplied for experiments and other scientific purposes, including teaching.

What are the requirements for certification training?

Personnel performing functions of animal care (a), euthanasia of animals (b) and conducting experiments (c): A specific course + A period of supervised work a center user, supplier or breeder during which the person works under the supervision of a designated person, competent in the function monitoring.

Personnel performing functions of design procedures (d), animal welfare supervisor (and) and veterinary (f): A specific course + A college degree.

What are the authorized courses?

What are the degrees accepted for the functions d, e and f?

Functions d and e: título universitario de licenciado, degree, máster o doctor, or equivalent, en Biología (animal), Medicine, Veterinary or any other discipline that incorporates in its training program for biology studies and animal physiology.

For the function d It can be any degree as long as an additional module on fundamentals of biology and animal physiology is made.

Function f: Veterinary title.

Note: foreign securities must be approved.

Are there other ways to identified that can serve for training?

In the functions, b and c, a vocational training or professional certificate. However, so far this training is not available.

How valid are the above categories to the publication of the Order ECC / 566/2015?

Having a category allows certain functions, with the following equation (transitory provision of the Order ECC / 566/2015):

  • Category A: function and b
  • Category B: function b and c
  • Category C: function c and d
  • Category D1: function and

Recognition of training abroad recognized

Member states: Recognition of formal training to perform the functions by the competent authorities of another Member State shall be effective throughout the national territory. Namely, should be official recognition, not by private entities.

Third States: The recognition of qualifications obtained in third countries shall ensure that the previous recognition was based at least in some requirements equivalent to those required in the Order.

Note: The courses taken abroad must be equivalent to those regulated in the Order. The completion of a course is not equivalent to training, it is only a component thereof.

Working Period

Who can exercise supervisor?

Any person appointed by the center, is provided with adequate and updated knowledge and responsibilities in overseeing function; have sufficient seniority to command respect and authority with respect to their knowledge and experience (a minimum of one year is recommended); have pedagogical skills; understands the reasons why the training and supervision are important; have good interpersonal skills; and is committed to the implementation of existing legislation.

Is it always necessary physical frequency supervisor?

NO. What requirements must meet the workplace?

In the framework of that project you can work under supervision?

In accordance with the principle of Reduction, animals used for work under the supervision must be those used in the ordinary work of the center, framed in licensed projects with different purposes, and projects not designed for exclusively training.

Length of time under supervision

The purpose of this work period is to ensure the protection of animals and good scientific practice, and is not a limiting factor of the person into employment, so in principle it should not move towards a shorter period compared to one longer. Its duration will be tailored to the individual circumstances of the individual, dexterity, etc., It is difficult to justify excessively short periods.

  • Function b: 15 hours for a group of species + 5 hours for each group of additional species

For primates, reference periods will be higher.

What should be checked by supervisors in assessing workers?
